My Philosophy
At the core of my teaching philosophy is the belief that mastering your ball flight is essential to playing your best golf. While it may take time for swing flaws to be corrected in slow motion video analysis, each lesson with me will positively impact your ball flight. Below, I outline the crucial elements of a successful golf swing.
Grip:
I teach golfers to establish a grip where the club rests diagonally across the fingers' base of your lead hand. Your thumb should be positioned slightly to the trail side of the shaft's center. The palm of the trail hand should face the target. This grip enhances wrist movement and club stability, enabling a natural squaring of the clubface.
Keep the Club in Balance:
Achieving a balanced club throughout the swing is vital for effective golf. The club is engineered to move in a specific manner. The more you let the club move as intended, the greater the likelihood it will return to the ball correctly. If the club is out of balance, you will have to manipulate it during the swing, which can lead to significant misses.
Swing Path:
When you master swinging the club in balance, you will naturally create an optimal swing path. This path, referred to as inside-square-inside, means the club approaches the ball from the inside, squares to the target at impact, and returns inside on the follow-through. This approach fosters a consistent ball flight.
Position of the Club Face:
Physics proves that the best chance for a golf ball to land on the green or fairway is to maintain a square clubface relative to the swing path. Avoid twisting the club's handle—just a 2-3 degree misalignment can lead to drives curving up to 30 yards off target. This leaves little margin for error, especially since many fairways are only about 30 yards wide. Understanding how club face position affects ball flight is essential for high-level play.
These three fundamental aspects of the golf swing provide a strong foundation for improving your game. Mastery of these elements does not guarantee flawless shots; even professionals mis-hit 25% of the time. However, it ensures that you maximize your potential for success with each shot. My instruction focuses on helping you achieve a reliable ball flight, regardless of your swing's appearance.
