When golfers think about golf fitness, they often think about strength, flexibility, or generating more clubhead speed.
Those things certainly matter.
But there is another component of physical preparation that is often overlooked:
The ability to control movement.
Golf requires the body to create movement while simultaneously controlling it.
You have to stabilize certain parts of the body while other parts move. You have to transfer forces from the ground through the body. You have to maintain balance while rotating. You have to control the pelvis, torso, arms, and hands as they move through a high-speed sequence.
That is a neuromuscular challenge.
And this is where I believe golf fitness can play an important role in golf instruction.
The Golf Swing Is More Than Rotation
Golfers are often told that they need to "rotate more."
But rotation by itself isn't the goal.
The body has to be able to control rotation.
Think about what happens during a golf swing.
The feet interact with the ground.
The legs and pelvis move.
The torso rotates.
The arms move relative to the torso.
The hands and club accelerate.
All of those movements have to be coordinated.
At the same time, the golfer has to maintain enough stability to control where the body is moving and where the club is going.
That's why I think of the golf swing as a combination of:
Mobility + Stability + Coordination + Strength + Speed
Not one of those qualities in isolation.
What Is Neuromuscular Control?
Neuromuscular control is essentially the nervous system's ability to coordinate the muscles and joints to produce and control movement.
Your brain and nervous system are constantly receiving information about:
Where your body is in space
- Where your joints are positioned
- How much force you're producing
- How quickly you're moving
- Your balance and orientation
- What is happening around you
- That information helps the body make adjustments.
This happens constantly during the golf swing.
You aren't consciously calculating the position of every joint.
Your nervous system is coordinating the movement.
The better question for golf fitness, therefore, isn't simply:
"How strong is this golfer?"
It's:
"Can this golfer control their body while producing the movement required by the golf swing?"
Stability Is Not the Same as Being Rigid
This is an important distinction.
When I use the word stability, I don't mean that the golfer should become stiff or prevent movement.
Stability is the ability to control a joint or body segment while movement occurs.
A golfer needs enough stability to create a consistent platform for movement while still allowing the appropriate amount of motion.
For example, the hips need to be able to move.
The thoracic spine needs to rotate.
The shoulders need to move.
The ankles need to move.
But those movements need to be coordinated.
That's why good golf fitness isn't simply about making a golfer stronger or more flexible.
It's about improving their ability to control the movement available to them.
Why Stabilization Training Matters
Stabilization-type exercises can provide a controlled environment in which golfers practice maintaining balance, controlling joint positions, producing force, and coordinating multiple body segments.
Consider exercises such as:
Single-leg balance variations
- Split-stance exercises
- Single-arm exercises
- Bird dogs
- Dead bugs
- Plank variations
- Pallof presses
- Controlled rotational exercises
- Single-leg strength exercises
- Hip and thoracic mobility exercises
- These exercises aren't golf swings.
They shouldn't be presented as if performing a plank automatically teaches someone how to swing a golf club.
That's not the point.
The point is that they can challenge the golfer's physical movement capacity.
A golfer who can control their pelvis while their upper body moves has one physical capability that can contribute to better movement.
A golfer who can maintain balance while producing force has another.
A golfer who can stabilize the trunk while moving the arms has another.
Those capabilities can become part of the physical foundation upon which golf skill is developed.
Fitness Doesn't Replace Golf Practice
This distinction is critical.
If a golfer wants to improve their golf swing, they still need to practice golf.
Doing 100 bird dogs isn't going to teach someone how to square the clubface.
Doing planks isn't going to teach someone how to control swing path.
Doing a single-leg squat isn't going to automatically improve their kinematic sequence.
Fitness training and golf practice have different jobs.
Golf practice develops golf skill.
Fitness training develops physical qualities that can support the golfer's ability to perform that skill.
The two should work together.
I think of it this way:
Fitness develops capacity.
Practice develops skill.
The golf swing uses both.
Physical Capacity Can Influence Movement
Every golfer has physical limits.
If the body can't comfortably access or control a particular movement, the golfer may find another way to accomplish the task.
That doesn't necessarily mean the alternative movement is "wrong."
It may simply be the movement solution available to that golfer.
This is one reason I don't believe every swing fault should be addressed exclusively through swing instruction.
Sometimes the golfer needs a better movement solution.
Sometimes they need more physical capacity.
Sometimes they need both.
For example, a golfer who struggles to maintain balance during the swing may benefit from balance and single-leg training.
A golfer who has difficulty controlling their trunk during rotation may benefit from exercises that challenge trunk stability while the limbs move.
A golfer who lacks the mobility necessary to access a particular position may need mobility work.
The fitness program should address the physical constraint, while golf practice teaches the golfer how to use their improved capacity within the golf movement.
The Nervous System Learns Through Movement
This brings us back to the same principle behind making a golf swing change.
The nervous system learns through experience.
When we perform an exercise, we're not just training a muscle.
We're providing the nervous system with information about how to coordinate movement under a particular set of conditions.
Balance.
Force.
Position.
Timing.
Coordination.
Resistance.
Speed.
The nervous system responds to the demands placed upon it.
That's why I don't want golf fitness to simply be a collection of exercises that happen to use the same muscles golfers use.
I want the exercises to have a purpose.
What physical quality are we developing?
Why does it matter?
What movement are we trying to improve?
How does this exercise challenge the golfer's ability to control that movement?
Those questions are more important than simply asking:
"Is this exercise good for golf?"
Stabilize → Move → Coordinate → Perform
One way I think about golf fitness is as a progression.
1. Stabilize
Can the golfer control the position of their body?
2. Move
Can they move through the necessary range of motion?
3. Coordinate
Can they control multiple body segments while producing movement?
4. Perform
Can they use those physical qualities during a high-speed golf movement?
This doesn't mean every golfer needs to complete four separate training phases.
Real movement is much more complicated than that.
Instead, it gives us a framework for understanding what we're trying to develop.
A golfer doesn't need to be "stable" before they can move.
They need to develop the ability to stabilize while moving.
That's the real goal.
Why Balance Matters in the Golf Swing
Balance is another excellent example.
A golfer doesn't simply stand still during a golf swing.
Their center of mass moves.
Pressure changes between the feet.
The pelvis rotates.
The torso rotates.
The arms move.
The club accelerates.
All of that happens while the golfer maintains enough control to strike a small ball with a club moving at high speed.
Balance training can therefore be useful—not because standing on one foot perfectly mimics a golf swing, but because it challenges the golfer's ability to control their body while their base of support is reduced.
That is a valuable physical quality.
And when we combine balance with strength, mobility, rotation, and coordination, we begin creating a much more complete physical preparation program.
Golf Fitness Should Support the Movement, Not Dictate It
This is where I think golf instruction and golf fitness need to work together.
We shouldn't train a golfer to perform an exercise simply because it resembles a golf swing.
And we shouldn't change a golfer's swing simply because an exercise suggests that their body "should" move a certain way.
Instead, we should ask:
What does this golfer need?
Maybe they need more mobility.
Maybe they need more strength.
Maybe they need better balance.
Maybe they need better trunk control.
Maybe they need better single-leg stability.
Maybe they need to improve their ability to produce and absorb force.
Maybe they already possess those qualities and simply need better golf-skill training.
The program should be individualized.
The Mark Rippy Golf Connection
This is where my golf instruction and golf fitness philosophies come together.
I don't view golf instruction and golf fitness as two completely separate systems.
They address two different sides of the same problem.
Golf Instruction
Teaches the golfer how to move the club and control the ball.
Golf Fitness
Helps develop the physical capacity to control and produce movement.
Golf Practice
Allows the golfer to turn that movement into a skill.
Together, they create a more complete approach to player development.
Assess → Develop → Practice → Transfer → Perform
That's the connection.
The Goal Isn't to Build a "Golf Body"
Golfers don't need to look like professional athletes to play good golf.
And they don't need to perform dozens of complicated "golf-specific" exercises.
The goal of golf fitness is not to make an exercise look like golf.
The goal is to develop the physical qualities that allow the golfer to move efficiently, control their body, produce force, and tolerate the demands of the game.
Strength.
Mobility.
Balance.
Stability.
Coordination.
Power.
Endurance.
Those qualities provide the foundation.
Golf practice turns that foundation into skill.
Build the Body. Train the Movement. Develop the Skill.
This is ultimately how I view the relationship between golf fitness and golf instruction.
A better golf swing isn't created by fitness alone.
And fitness isn't a substitute for instruction.
But when we improve a golfer's physical capacity and their ability to control movement, we can give them a better foundation from which to develop their golf skills.
That's why stabilization and neuromuscular-control exercises have a place in a golf fitness program.
Not because they magically fix swing faults.
Not because every exercise has to look like a golf swing.
But because the golf swing is a movement—and the body has to be capable of controlling movement before it can consistently reproduce it.
The goal is simple:
Build the body.
Train the movement.
Practice the skill.
Transfer it to the golf course.
